Who are we?
Advocates, Promoters and Fundraisers
We are Advocates for the Ottawa Public Library
As advocates of a strong public library system, we participate in the annual budget debates at Ward and City Council meetings and take every opportunity to publicize the library, its programs and its services.
We consider all 33 branches to be part of a highly efficient system operating at the most reasonable cost when compared to similar municipal libraries across Canada. We wish to build upon and protect that achievement.
We are Promoters of Literacy
As promoters of literacy, we help build the library collections in both official languages, improve library accessibility, and sponsor children's reading and writing programs.
We also publish pot-pourri, an annual bilingual anthology of children’s poetry and short stories, to inspire our youth.
We are Fundraisers for library materials and services
We raise about $250,000 annually, with most funds coming from the operation of used bookstores, self-serve bookshelves in library branches, and specialty book sales run by local committees. Most of the funds we raise are put toward library materials and services not covered by the regular municipal budget.
Be a friend
There are many ways to contribute to FOPLA’s cause. Since we raise funds through book sales, you can donate books, volunteer your time, purchase books from our sales and stores, or become an official member.
