Who are we? Advocates for the Ottawa Public Library As advocates of a strong public library system we participate in the annual budget debates at Ward and City Council meetings and take every opportunity to publicize the library as an undoubted success of municipal amalgamation. We consider all 33 branches as part of a system that is operating at a high level of efficiency at the most reasonable cost when compared to similar municipal libraries across Canada. We wish to build upon and protect that achievement. Promoters of Literacy
We also publish pot-pourri, an annual anthology of bilingual children’s poetry and short stories to inspire our youth. Fundraisers for library materials and services We raise about $250,000 annually, with most funds coming from the operation of used bookstores, self serve bookshelves in library branches and specialty book sales run by local committees. Acquisitions are the heart of our library system. Most of the funds we raise is put toward library materials and services not covered by the regular municipal budget. Organization Board of Directors The FOPLA Board of Directors carries out and coordinates advocacy efforts, performs financial services for Local Committees, and allocates funds raised towards any activity or program that it deems appropriate. Employees At present, FOPLA has only two part-time employees who in addition to a number of other essential services, provide a constant link between our community, our volunteers, our supporters and our Board of Directors. Volunteers FOPLA relies on a team of over 300 volunteers who run our bookstores, sit on our Board of Directors, sort books and do an unlimited number of tasks that make FOPLA so successful. The talent and commitment of our volunteers is something FOPLA is very proud of and we are committed to recognizing their contributions both internally and externally. How Can You Help? Join FOPLA
